The Deadbase, Jr.: The Portable Guide to Grateful Dead Songlists
Published in Paperback by Deadbase (June, 1995)
Authors: John W. Scott, Stu Nixon, and Mike Dolgushkin
Average review score:

A Dead Head's (portable) best friend
There are a multitude of us out there who obsess about the Grateful Dead (and you know who you are). The larger, full-size versions of DeadBase have been invaluable to us for many years, helping us to make certain the concert dates of our favorite tapes, letting us know every time "Sugaree" or "The Music Never Stopped" was played and whether it opened the show or closed the first set, how long a particular show ran and gave Deadheads an opportunity to write and reminisce about our best Grateful Dead experiences. The larger editions of Deadbase make handsome additions to any Deadhead's library but this compact version is the one you keep with you (even to this day, 5 years after the last Dead performance)in your backpack, at your desk, near your computer, whatever. Deadbase Jr gives reliable information that a Dead fan, tape collector, novice or expert craves in portable fashion. If you know a Deadhead who has never heard of Deadbase (unlikely but possible), introduce them to this fun paperback, it is guaranteed to please and don't be surprised if they look for the larger, more comprehensive versions shortly thereafter. Like all Deadheads, when we find something we like, we always want more! ENJOY! :)

Desert Gem Trails
Published in Paperback by Gembooks (June, 2003)
Authors: Strong and Gem Guides Book Company
Average review score:

Reviewing "Desert Gem Trails"
Desert Gem Trails, by Mary Frances Strong, is perhaps the most invaluable guide to rockhounding sites in southern California. Despite having been published over 40 years ago, her maps and illustrations are extremely accurate -- an absolute necessity when venturing out into the California deserts. Her love of the beauty, solace, and wonder to be found in the desert comes through, particularly in the introduction to the book.

I began collecting six years ago, when my kids were 5 and 7 -- old enough to appreciate overnight outings without whining. We wish to open a small natural history museum, but for small kids, the need for finding collecting sites that were "sure things" is obvious. Thanks to the wealth of information in Desert Gem Trails, we've able to find beautiful samples depsite the many decades of collecting at many of these sites.

A danger in desert collecting trips is getting lost. The desert now has such a bewildering mess of unofficial "roads" created by offroad vehicles that routes to sites (the Hauser Bed geodes location comes to mind) can be nearly impossible to find. This book gives extremely accurate distances -- almost always to the tenth of a mile and well within the margin of error for different sized cars -- and helps the collector find the location.

Desert Gem Trails is a must for anyone wishing to explore the many wonderful collecting sites of our desert. Bear in mind, however, that some of the more remote sites may have been subjected to road closures by the BLM in recent years, thus necessitating a hike instead of a drive. Contact the local BLM offices for maps and up-to-date info before embarking on a trip and double-check road locations to ensure a happy and successful trip.

Diamond Rock
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (June, 1985)
Author: Mark Schorr
Average review score:

Red goes out with a bang.
This was the third and last of Schorr's loving parody of the pulp detectives in his Simon Jaffee/Red Diamond series. In this no holds barred, no punches pulled thriller former cab driver Simon Jaffee, or "Red Diamond, 1940's Private Eye" and tough guy as he believes himself to be, meets up with his former wife Milly (who's suing him for divorce), his genius All-American son Sean (who's searching for his underage slut runaway sister, and wants dad's help)and a host of music industry moguls and rock stars who are worried that someone seems to be methodically murdering them one by one. The irony of all this is vividly conveyed by author Schorr, who paints a sympathetic and believable picture of "Red" who refuses to believe either his son or ex wife's lawyer, but still helps the boy while trying to guard a group of obnoxious, spoiled, male rock stars. All throughout of course he's always on the lookout for his beloved moll "Fifi" and the evil "Rocco" criminal mastermind. The only bad part of this book is that Schorr stopped writing the series with it, but read it and judge whether or not he did well by his hard boiled multi-personality hero.
